By Bayne Hughes
About 20 percent of Brookhaven Middle School students plan to transfer out of the embattled school. Most of the 139 students who declared intentions to transfer said they prefer Cedar Ridge to Oak … More »

I guess since Phil created the Brookhaven cesspool, it is only right that he get to wade through it for awhile..

Excellent point Jerry. And did Nichols really think only 7 students would transfer? 1% is a margin of error. Sounds like more than seven left just to save on gas.

Like obama said.....we need to spread the wealth.....LOL

It's a shame that parents want to shuck responsibilities to "other teachers" instead of helping their own kids learn. Don't they realize that helping their own kids will help them get further in life and get better jobs? they are so narrow minded.

Ed is getting off to a rough start. 1%? More than that will transfer for convenience, to avoid a new unknown principal, and to go to a newer nicer school.

They are causing CRMS to reach or exceed capacity and they are ok with that?!?!? Why in the hell did Ed think on 1% would transfer? Everyone else knew this would be a problem. I wonder if he really had his head in the sky or if he was just trying to delay the fury. CRMS parents ARE NOT HAPPY! You may see a decrease in in the students that gives this school such great scores because they just may be moving to private schools or moving out of town...

I grew up in Southwest, attended Austin. Moved to Old Decatur when I returned after college. Moved back to Southwest when the kids were near middle school to have them in CRMS. Now this. I honestly feel sick thinking back, how I could've just bypassed Southwest and kept on trucking to Hartselle.

Missing & more important detail is how many white & how many Black Students are asking for transfer. My guess more than 80 percent will be white student.

Transferring schools is not going to solve the problem. I can only imagine the students that will be transferring. This is not fair to the students at CRMS that have worked so hard to have good tests scores. Can't wait to see how this year goes.

The test scores that kept them from reaching AYP were in special education reading and math. Making 26 out of 28 benchmarks with a school that is 90% free or reduced lunch is outstanding. Kids that have learning disibilities can learn, but at a slower pace than other kids. The whole testing issue is greatly misunderstood by the public. Every high school in the state has special ed kids that do not make the score to pass AYP, even the great and mighty Hartselle. The thing that keeps them from being in the same boat as Brookhaven is that they don't have enough special ed students to qualify as a sub-group. I am not saying that I wouldn't move my kid, all I am saying is that the test data is greatly misconstrued by the media and the public.

do we get the title 1 money associated with these students as well?

This is like stone gate all over again!

How do people think CRMS is going to support this student increase? I'll tell you, re-assign teachers from Brookhaven to take over classrooms at CRMS. Is this really a solution for the problem?

Chances are that most of the students who transfer are the ones who didnt put Brookhaven in this spot. It takes parental involvement to transfer. Also the students that are transferring because CRMS is closer are not taking advantage of public transportation. These parents are producers not moochers.

Right on John. Perhaps the school system should look into spreading the special education students and come up with a plan that does not put a high percentage of them at Brookhaven. The kids/parents that transfer should be treated with respect and not be treated like subhumans. They are attempting to better themselves.

It is so sad that many Cedar Ridge parents are angry about this. I guess you don't want your kids going to Austin either, where most of the Brookhaven students go as well. You parents are influencing your kids in the WRONG direction. Your kids will be the ones not accepting and picking on the BMS transfers. I'm sure you'd be happy if they went to Oak Park. What if you were in their position? Look in the mirror......I'm sure that you elitist parents have several.
