Cavanaugh to bring enthusiasm to PSC
The Alabama Public Service Commission is a referee between consumers and the companies it regulates. The recent Alabama Power Co. rate increase is an example of its work. Alabama Power sought a 14.6 percent rate increase for residential customers. When that met stiff opposition, the company scaled back its request to 8.2 percent. Industrial customers faced a 25 percent increase but that one dropped, too, to 14 percent. All of this took place before the commission that went on to approve the compromise increases. Its role is to create balance. Most of the commission’s work today focuses on energy costs, but its Oct. 7 agenda also listed legal, trucking and telecommunication items. Former Democratic Lt. Gov. Lucy Baxley, 70, is running for the presidency of the commission in Tuesday’s general election. Her Republican opponent is Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, 42. Both candidates have long years of service in government and politics. Both candidates have the ability to preside at PSC meetings. It’s not a physically demanding role, and Ms. Baxley’s unfortunate stroke two years ago should not keep her from doing the job. Ms. Cavanaugh, however, will bring new ideas and enthusiasm to the commission. Working with Morgan County native Susan Parker, who won election to the PSC two years ago, they can be a forceful duo helping the state become a leader in renewable and cleaner energy. The Daily recommends Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh for the presidency of the Alabama Public Service Commission.
