2,792 vote on Hartselle tax by late afternoon

HARTSELLE — By 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, almost 2,800 Hartselle residents had cast ballots on a proposed 7.5-mill property tax increase.

According to election officials, 1,746 had voted at Sparkman Civic Center and 1,046 at the American Legion building. Hartselle had 53 absentee ballots.

Voters are deciding whether they want to support the tax to help pay for a new Hartselle High with an estimated cost of between $25 million and $30 million.

Polls will remain open until 7 p.m. Results will be tabulated at City Hall, but the council will not certify them until March 18.
