Decatur picks up area win
Decatur High’s baseball team scored a Class 5A, Area 16 win on Monday, downing Muscle Shoals 7-4 on the road. Senior Blaine Ingram pitched the complete game for the Red Raiders, striking out five and allowing no earned runs. Ingram held steady on the mound and the Red Raiders also responded at the plate. Down 4-0 going into the fourth inning, Decatur mounted a comeback that culminated when Graham Spencer hit a two-run homer in the sixth that broke a 4-4 tie. The round-tripper drove in Ben Seabrook and put Decatur ahead for good. Decatur’s Tyler Spivey hit three singles, drove in a run and scored another in the win. Teammate Will Dennis knocked a double, two singles and scored a run, while Ben Neill and Seabrook each hit a pair of singles. Seabrook added an RBI. Hunter Smith doubled and drove in two runs. William Sartain and John Alexander each tacked on a run for the Red Raiders. Decatur (8-14) will host a doubleheader with Muscle Shoals on Tuesday beginning at 4:30 p.m. Cullman 9-4, Austin 3-3: Matthew Tittle and Corey Jackson each homered in the first game but it wasn’t enough. Mathew Frazier and Aaron Richards each had a single and double. In game two, Jackson had an RBI double while Trey Richard had a pair of singles. Aaron Richards had a single and run batted in. Austin (18-10) plays at Huntsville High on Tuesday. Speake 6, Lynn 5: Cary Logan’s infield single in the top of the seventh knocked in Joe Hyde with the winning run for the Bobcats in a Class 1A, Area 11 contest in Lynn on Monday afternoon. Logan, Jesse Crowe, T.J. Green and Zach Vick each had two hits for Speake. Vick had a pair of RBIs. Green struck out eight batters in seven innings to earn the victory. Speake (12-6, 5-0) hosts Lynn at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Lawrence County 7 Priceville 0: Lawrence County (15-6, 3-0) got a complete game shutout from Wes Holley and a 10-hit offensive attack. Holley struck out nine and allowed three hits in seven innings. Britt White had a double and two singles. Scott Steele hit his third homer of the year. Matthew Pugh added a double and two RBIs. Logan Oliver had two hits and drove in a run. Jordon Hill added two hits. Grant Peebles contributed a double. Josh Gaines had two RBIs and Radney Wallace drove in a run to round out the offensive effort for the Red Devils. Red Devils are back in 4A, Area 15 action in Moulton against Priceville beginning at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday. Elkmont 3, Clements 2: Tom Logan pitched a four-hitter for the Red Devils. Justin Marshall had a two-run single, Justin Wilson, Landon Lawrence, Dylan Brazeal and Logan each added a singles. In the bottom of the seventh, Clements loaded the bases with two outs and right fielder Brandon Solomon made a diving game winning catch for the third out. Hatton 6, West Morgan 5: In a rematch of last year’s Class 2A state semifinal matchup, An RBI-single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh by Hatton’s Chase Martin scored the tying run. Nick Hood, pinch running for Lee Allen crossed home, tying the score at 5-5 before David Mims’ two-out double drove in Zeke Nichols for the win. Hatton junior Darren Hand got the win in a game that Hornets head coach Brent Gillespie said was “really well pitched by both sides.” Hand (3-2) went the distance and struck out four in eight innings. For West Morgan, Tyler Jones went all eight innings, striking out three. At the plate, Hand hit three singles and drove in two runs for Hatton. Teammate Dustin Brewer also singled in the contest. Matthew Poole delivered a two-run homer in the third inning for the Rebels, while Josh McAbee and Tyler Rogers each hit two single and scored twice. West Morgan will host Hatton (8-14) on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Russellville 9, Athens 0: Russellville scored seven runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth, and while Athens head coach Thad Prater said his team made contact, the hits weren’t going through for the Golden Eagles. “We hit the ball, we just hit it right to them,” Prater said. “We got out of a couple of jams, but we also made a few errors that cost us. We’ve got to regroup.” Clay McDonald’s double was Athens’ highlight at the plate. Athens starter Colin McMurry struck out four in five innings. Athens (15-5) will host Russellville on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Decatur Heritage 10, Covenant Christian 6: The Eagles amasses 14 hits led by Bo Godwin and Nick Mayo, who each had a double and a single. Sam Hurt also had an extra base hit in the win, adding a double. Brent Denson, William Littlejohn and Chase Wright each had a pair of singles. Thomas Vinton went five innings on the mound for the win, striking out three before being relived by younger brother James Vinton, who struck out two in the final two innings. Decatur Heritage was ahead 2-0 in the fourth inning of a partial second game that was called because of darkness. James Vinton struck out four in three innings pitched. Godwin drove in Chris Oliver and Denson also scored. Hazlewood will play at Decatur Heritage on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Tanner 3, Falkville 2: Tanner went up 3-0 before the Blue Devils mounted a two-run rally in the fifth inning. Tanner’s Chip Greenhaw held off the comeback, striking out nine and allowing just three hits in seven innings on the mound. Mark Adams, Jerry Skipworth and Corey Ham all scored a run for Tanner in the win. Landon Stephens posted two RBIs for the Rattlers, while David Adams drove in one run. Tanner (7-7) will play at Falkville on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Danville 8, Good Hope 2: Senior Roger Smith got the pitching win and helped his own cause at the plate with a two-run homer, a double and three RBIs. Cole Veazey was also hot at the plate with a double, triple and two RBIs. Parker Hogan hit two singles for the winners and Dakota Wilson doubled. Randy Thomason and Jake Mahathy each added a single. Smith (4-1) pitched the complete game and struck out six. Danville 7, Good Hope 5: Michael Veazey remained undefeated (9-0) on the mound, striking out six in the eight-inning affair for the win. Zach Ward’s double in the top of the eighth drove in the go-ahead run for the Hawks. Brian Rogers hit a double and a single and Schuyler Forman doubled. Hogan, Wilson and Smith each added a single.
