Russell pitches Decatur past Huntsville

Mollie Russell struck out 13 batters and allowed only one hit as Decatur edged Huntsville 1-0 at home Wednesday.

Kayla Maness scored the lone run as a pinch-runner for Russell. Abi Lott accounted for the RBI with an infield grounder.

At the plate, Decatur pounded out eight hits. Russell had a double and a single, while Whitney Fletcher singled twice.

Jennifer Lawrence doubled, and Scarlett Wright, Liz Pressley and Me’Osha Simpson each had one single.

Decatur (18-8) hits the field again Thursday when the Lady Red Raiders play at Austin at 6 p.m. On Friday, they host Cullman at 6 p.m.

Ardmore 3, East Limestone 0: Playing a Class 4A, Area 14 matchup at East Limestone, Ardmore’s Casey Steadman went the distance on the mound, striking out 10 and giving up only three hits.

Morgan Franks and Hallie Sandberg shared pitching duties for East with Franks pitching the first four innings, striking out three, walking two, giving up three hits and three runs. Sandberg pitched the final three innings, striking out three and giving up two hits.

Jyssica Pepper, Bess Rhodes and Staci Johnson each had a single for East Limestone.

Baseball

Priceville 12, East Lawrence 9: Winning pitcher Jeremy Hale struck out three in four innings of work for for Priceville (12-18).

Jared Taylor and Stephen Starkey each went 2-for-4 with one double, and Tyler Croft went 2-for-4 with two singles.

Cullman 7-8, Hartselle 5-14: The Tigers (28-9) took the second game of its doubleheader with Cullman behind solid hitting from Zac Bradley, Zach Waddell and Garrett Turrentine. Each three had one single and one double. Tony Weaver knocked two singles, and Ethan Widener had two singles and scored two runs.

In Cullman’s win in the first game, Hartselle’s Willy Chapel had one single and blasted a solo home run, and Turrentine nailed a home run in the fifth inning. Ryan Joy also knocked a home run for the Tigers.

Tanner 5-2, West Morgan 4-18: Before losing in the second game, Tanner got seven strong innings from pitcher Chip Greenhaw to beat the Rebels. Greenhaw also knocked one double and blasted a home run.

Keith Shoulders had one double and an RBI for Tanner and Brett Pepper hit one double.

Soccer

Brewer boys 4, Cullman 1: Brewer opened the scoring 18 minutes into the game when Grant Pierce scored with an assist from Kohl Sowder.

The next goal came 29:32 into the half when Jeremy Talley scored off a rebound. Then with 49 seconds left in the first half, Sowder scored off a Keith Slater assist. Brewer’s final goal came 22:58 into the second half when Pierce got his second goal off Slater’s second assist.

Cullman closed out the scoring with 50 seconds left in the game with a goal from Caleb Hollingsworth.

Brewer (8-3-0) will play in the Morgan County tournament Thursday.
