Decatur girls soccer blanks Athens
No. 2-ranked Decatur High’s girls soccer team scored two first-half goals and used a stifling defense to shut out sixth-ranked Athens 2-0 on Thursday afternoon at Athens Stadium. The Decatur defense limited Athens to one shot on goal in the game and gained its 14th shutout of the season. Decatur seniors Lindsey Hawkins and Meg Adams each scored a goal early in the Sarah Beth Henderson and Adams assisted Hawkins on her goal, and Hawkins returned the favor with an assist on Adams’ goal. The Athens defense recorded a shutout of its own in the second half as Decatur bombarded the Lady Golden Eagles’ goal with shots but were unable to pick up any additional goals. Decatur (16-5-5) will face Austin in the Morgan County tournament championship at 7 p.m. Friday at Grady Long Park in Hartselle. Austin boys 9, Buckhorn 1: Joseph Salgado and Jake Mendenhall each scored two goals and added one assist for the Black Bears. Pasqual Alonso scored two goals and John Hammond, Matthew Robinson and Wilson Godinez each added one goal. Golf Bob Jones boys 157, Austin 160: Madison Terry carded a 36 to lead Austin. Zach Gourgeot and Jeremy Payne each scored 41 and Trent Shell shot a 42. Kevin Hines had a 48 for the Black Bears. Austin 119 girls, Bob Jones 156: Sloan Davis scored a 36 and Kristin Askew had a 41. Francie Caradine shot a 42 and Erin Reed had a 45. Softball Madison Academy 3, East Limestone 1: Morgan Franks went 2-for-3 with two singles and Carly Rhodes added one triple. Staci Johnson also went 2-for-3 with two singles. Tennis Austin boys 6, Huntsville 3: Alex Worley, Kyle Smith, Kyle Justice and Ben Ward all recorded singles wins Wednesday. Worley/Smith and Justice/Ward also won in doubles.
