Lawrence County takes Decatur in softball
East Limestone gets by Athens

Lawrence County High’s softball team got a quality 3-1 win over Decatur on Monday in a matchup of two teams that have held steady in the state rankings this season.

Class 4A No. 9 Lawrence County (25-12) put on its usual solid performance at the plate, paced by Whitney Hood’s two doubles and a single. Hood also scored twice in the win.

Ashley Pitt and Shae Lane each had a single for the Lady Red Devils, while Pitt and Kassie Terry each drove in a run.

Winning pitcher Kaylyn Smith had two singles and scored a run to help her own cause. On the mound, Smith struck out four and allowed three hits.

For 5A No. 7 Decatur (23-14), Jelisa Thompson, Meg Whitten and Liz Pressley each chipped in a single. Thompson drove in Jennifer Lawrence for the Lady Red Raiders’ lone score.

East Limestone 7, Athens 4: Hallie Sandberg pitched the complete game for the Lady Indians, striking out five, walking three and giving up six hits for the win.

Bess Rhodes helped pace a solid effort at the plate for East Limestone with a double, a single and an RBI. Carly Rhodes and Jyssica Pepper each hit two singles. Rhodes also drove in a run.

Also for the Lady Indians, Morgan Franks doubled and drove in two runs, while Kayla Sneed delivered a single and two RBIs.

Staci Johnson and Danielle Holder each added a single, and McKenzie Crabtree had an RBI.

East Limestone will play a Class 4A, Area 14 game at Madison County on Tuesday.

Grissom 4, Austin 0: Sarah Corn doubled and Laura Lindsey and Melissa Thompson singled for the Lady Black Bears.

Austin (17-21) will host Bob Jones at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.

West Morgan 6, West Limestone 2: Eighth-grader Hayden Hamby hit two singles, a triple, drove in a run and scored twice.

That’s not all. Hamby also got the pitching win, striking out six in the complete-game effort.

Mikaila Etheredge doubled and had two singles, and teammate Sara Hulvey had a single and two RBIs.

West Morgan (36-4) will play at Danville on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

Golf

Danville 171, Decatur Heritage 184: Dylan Childers carded a 39 at the Hawks breezed at Quail Creek Golf Course in Hartselle on Monday.

Decatur Heritage’s Taylor Warren fired a 41.

Danville got a 42 from Daniel Bowen and Russell Standridge was another shot behind.

David Bates added a 47 for the Hawks.

Phillip Fitzgerald had a 46 for Decatur Heritage. Jack Francis recorded a 48 and Jackson Parker posted a 49 for the Eagles.

Danville plays Brewer in a match at Chesley Oaks in Baileyton on Tuesday.

Hatton takes team win: The Hatton Hornets edged R.A. Hubbard 212-214 at Valley Landing Golf Course on Monday.

R.A. Hubbard’s Ramsee Miller was the top individual, shooting 42 for medalist honors.

Robin Coan led Hatton’s team win, carding a 50.

Other Chiefs’ scores included Tevyn Young (56), Fred Davenport (57), Dontay Robinson (59).

For the Hornets, Stephen Nesmith (52), Blake Hall (55) and Grant Parrish (55) followed Coan’s top mark.

Lawrence County teams will play an 18-hole county tournament Thursday at Deer Run Golf Course.

Soccer

West Morgan girls win in shootout: West Morgan’s girls team capped its season with a win over St. Bernard on Monday.

The Lady Rebels tied 2-2 in regulation before winning the shootout, 3-1 on penalty kicks.

West Morgan (7-14-1) finished its season with six more wins than a year ago when the Lady Rebels earned the program’s first win midseason — the squad’s lone victory in 2007.

Junior Kristen Baker scored both regulation goals for the Lady Rebels on Monday, punching in scores in the 53rd and 78th minute.

Junior Rachel Gentry was on goal for West Morgan in the first half, allowing no goals and recording six saves.

Eighth-grader DeAnda Kimbrell was the Lady Rebels goalkeeper in the second half and the shootout with seven saves.
