Decatur golfers grab 8-team tournament
Falkville girls claim sectional track meet
Decatur High’s boys golf team won a scorecard playoff with Huntsville to finish first in the eight-team Domino’s/Pepsi Classic at Decatur Country Club on Saturday. Decatur and Huntsville each shot 302, but the Red Raiders won when comparing the scores of the No. 1 players in the lineups. The Red Raiders’ Bill Nabors shot 70, while Hunts-ville’s Phillip Brol had a 72. Athens (321) was third, followed by Austin (327), Scottsboro (328), Bob Jones (328), Hartselle (333) and Priceville (368). For Decatur, Mac Hennessy shot a 76, while Andrew Lowry was at 77 and Braxton Rainey 79. Athens’ Craig Whitt shot a 75, followed by teammates Armand Hunt (79), T.J. Huff (83) and Nick Maplesdon (84). Austin got a 70 from Madison Terry, an 80 from Zach Gourgeot, an 87 from Sloan Davis and a 90 from Kristen Askew. Hartselle’s scores included Josh Roberson (75), Andrew Sandor (79), Clark Gully (83) and Kaleb Estes (96). Priceville’s best score came from Brett Wilson with a 75. Huntsville’s Mclain Leberte won medalist honors with a 69. Track and field Class 2A, Section 3 girls meet: Falkville’s girls scored 293 points to win their division. Cold Springs placed second in 134. Falkville’s Alesia Smith won the 200-meter dash, while Krystal Gibbs was first in the 400-meter dash. Lauren Estes was first in the 100-meter and 300-meter hurdles. Falkville placed first in the 1,600-meter relay and 3,200-meter relay. Gibbs, Emily Rob-bins, Myka McCarley and Grace Wilhite ran the 1,600-meter relay, and Wilhite, Bridget Jack-son, Kayla Walker and Crystal Carver ran the 3,200-meter race. Paige McCarley was first in the high jump, long jump and triple jump. Angela Robbins won the discus. Class 2A, Section 3 boys meet: Falkville scored 204 points, finishing in second place just behind Cold Springs (205.5). The Blue Devils’ Jace Wilemon won the 400-meter dash and 300-meter hurdles, while teammate Justin Blanchard was first in the 800-meter and 1,600-meter runs. Anthony Stid-ham was first in the 110-meter hurdles. Falkville won the 1,600-meter relay with Blanchard, Wilemon, Noah Sims and Evan Bur-gess running. Steven Lindsey won the high jump and triple jump, and teammate Aaron Williams won the discus, while Michael Dekich took the javelin. Class 1A, Section 3 boys meet: The Speake boys finished first with 192 points, while Gaston was second with 150 and Athens Bible third with 62. For Speake, Zach Vick won the 100, 200 and 400 meters. Jamarcus Robinson won the 110-meter hurdles, and teammate T.J. Green was first in the 300-meter hurdles. K.C. Orr was first in the shot put. Athens Bible’s Andy Davidson was first in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. In addition, Davidson, Tyler Claxton, Cliff Denton and Colby Phillips were first in the 3,200-meter relay. Davidson won the meet’s most valuable performer award. Class 1A, Section 3 girls meet: Gaston won, and Speake placed sixth. For the Lady Bobcats, Heather Kirby gave her team its best individual finish by placing second in the 800-meter run. In addition, Kirby, Shawnee Voss, Elizabeth Owens and Katie Waldrop were first in the 3,200-meter relay. Softball West Morgan won all five games it played Saturday to take the 1A-3A division champi-onship of the Cullman Invitational. The Lady Rebels beat Mount Hope 11-2 and 13-2, Good Hope 11-1, Hatton 2-0 and Mar-bury Top-ranked West Morgan improved to 44-5 heading into the Class 2A, Area 15, which the Lady Rebels will host, beginning Thursday. West Morgan 11, Mount Hope 3: In pool play, Lauren Seibert slugged a grand slam, and Whitlee Potter went 2-for-3 with two singles and three RBIs. Hayden Hamby deliv-ered a double and an RBI, and Sarah Hulvey added a single. Hamby got the pitching win, striking out two. West Morgan 13, Mount Hope 2: Starting the single-elimination portion of the event, West Morgan got a 3-for-3 performance from Hannah Harris with two RBIs. Rachel Harbin added two singles and two RBIs, while Seibert and Mikaila Etheredge each had a single and an RBI. Hamby got the pitching win, striking out one. West Morgan 11, Good Hope 1: Seibert got the pitching win, and at the plate, Ashley Thorn singled twice and drove in a run. Seibert added a single. West Morgan 2, Hatton 0: Seibert struck out 10 to get the win, while Harris had a single and a double. Etheredge and Harbin each had a single. West Morgan 4, Marbury 0: In the championship game, Seibert went 2-for-2 with a single, a double and an RBI. Thorn, Harris and Hulvey each had a single. Seibert struck out 14 and allowed three hits on her way to the pitching win. Bob Jones 9, Decatur 1: Playing in pool play in the Cullman Invitational, Whit-ney Fletcher, Scarlett Wright, Jennifer Lawrence, Jelisa Thompson and Kayla Maness each had one single. The Lady Red Raiders’ Meg Whitten pitched and struck out three bat-ters. Decatur 0, Pell City 0: Mollie Russell pitched and struck out 12, while allowing one hit. At the plate, Russell had three singles, and Thompson and Liz Pressley added one apiece. Grissom 5, Decatur 1: Fletcher, Wright, Thompson, Lawrence and Abi Lott each had a single, and Lott added an RBI. Whitten pitched and allowed five hits. Mortimer Jordan 5, Decatur 0: In the first game of single-elimination tourna-ment play, Fletcher doubled, and Lawrence and Pressley each had a single. Russell pitched and struck out three while allowing five hits. Whitten pitched as well and gave up two singles. Decatur (24-17) will host Hartselle at home Monday at 6 p.m. in the Lady Red Raiders’ last regular-season game. Hartselle 10, Austin 0: In pool play at the Cullman Invitational, Breanna Riley got the pitching win while striking out three. Hartselle’s Kristy Pevahouse had a double and a single and five RBIs, while Sara Lang singled three times and drove in a run. Kimmie Minor had a double. For Austin, Chelsey Stewart had a single. Haley Barnette pitched and struck out four. Bob Jones 5, Austin 2: Lauren Lindsey slugged a solo home run for Austin, while Sarah Corn singled twice. Stewart, Amy Anderson and Melissa Thompson each had one single. The Lady Black Bears (18-26) will play at Grissom on Monday at 4 p.m.
