Austin’s Wallace wins long jump at sectional meet
Decatur boys 2nd, girls 3rd in their section
Austin High’s track and field team won a pair of championships in Saturday’s Class 6A, Section 4 championships at Madison. The Black Bears’ Kanard Wallace won the boys long jump, and the Austin boys 400-meter relay team finished first. Austin placed seventh in the boys team standings and eighth in the girls competition. Bob Jones won both divisions. Also for Austin’s boys, J.J. Marshall was third in the 100 meters, and Cornelius Jenkins was fifth in the 200. Tamarcus Simms was fifth in the javelin. The boys also finished third in the 1,600-meter relay. In the girls events, Austin’s Jennifer Dunn was second in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Kreshonda Smith was fifth in the 100 meters, and Meg Ross was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles. The Austin girls placed third in the 3,200-meter relay. Class 5A, Section 3 Decatur’s girls placed second in the section championships Saturday, while the Red Raiders’ boys were third. Brewer was seventh in both boys and girls, while Athens was 10th in girls and 12th in boys. Scottsboro won both divisions. Individually in the girls competition, Decatur’s Jada Billings third in the 100 meters and long jump, while Jamesia Orr was second in the 400 meters. Teammate Whitney Bentford was second in the 100-meter hurdles, while Anna Laura Bryant was fifth. The Lady Red Raiders’ Victoria Wynn was third in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Decatur’s 400-meter relay was third with Billings, Tequila McClain, Orr and Brooke Willis. The Lady Raiders’ 1,600-meter relay was third with Amelia Koenig, Jamesia Orr, Sondra Orr and Kylie Peebles, and the 3,200-meter team was third with Kylie Peebles, Tiara Willingham, Ashley Brooks and Laura Cross. Athens’ LeCresha Horton was third in the 200 meters, and teammate Elizabeth Schexnayder was second in the shot put. For Brewer, Emily Trotter was fifth in the 800 and fourth in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. April Flowers was fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Brewer’s Misty Peden was fifth in javelin. In the boys events, Decatur’s Antwan Orr was second in the 100 meters, and Ryan Watson was third in the 200. Darrius Simpson placed second in the 110-meter hurdles, just ahead of teammate Arron Hortan, who was third. Spencer Matthews placed fifth in the 800 meters. In the relays, Decatur won the 1,600 meters and was second in the 800 and 3,200 meters. In the shot put, Decatur’s Dewan Troupe was second, and Brewer’s John Tallent was fourth. Decatur’s Adam Gillespie was third in the discus, and Tallent was second in the javelin. Also for Brewer, Vinny Muggeo was fifth in the 400 meters and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Travis Holloman was sixth in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. Athens’ Sedale Bailey was fourth in the 200 meters. Class 4A, Section 4 East Lawrence’s Joni Buttram placed third in the girls 3,200 meters, while Priceville’s Faith McRaney was fourth in the 400 meters. Priceville’s Mallory Greene was fifth in the discus, and Maegan Lancaster matched that in the high jump. Will Halbrooks of Priceville finished third in the boys shot put.
