Letter to the editor
Americans won't lose their guns

To The Daily: I am a gun owner. I would be really upset if I lost that right. I have a problem with the NRA and Second Amendment groups. They act like Congress can get together tomorrow, write a bill, pass it and our gun rights will be gone. They forget to say that a bill repealing or changing the Second Amendment has to be written and presented, not just to the federal government, but also to the governing bodies of all 50 states. It has to be passed into law in the states, verbatim — every word, spelling, period and comma — everything — before it can come back to the federal government to be passed into law and become an amendment. When do you see that happening?

Instead of allowing the NRA and others scare people, we need to make them tell the truth. There is no way we are going to lose our guns.

Judy,

I never dreamed congress would be able to make Americans buy anything they did not with to buy either. Freedoms are passing away just as mandatory heath care is now going into effect. The constitution is only a stumbling block to a president that puts his agenda ahead of the desires of the people. You can delude yourself if you but the liberal senate, the president and the media are chipping away at what was the foundation of the greatest nation in history.

Well, I feel that Judy is more right than Steve. He needs to realize that we here in the south are in the minority. The majority of Americans today feel that Obama is doing a good job, and exactly what they hoped he would do. We can cry and moan that our rights are being taken away, but the truth is that the government is working just like it is supposed to. Majority rules. Get used to it.

The way I'm looking at it is IF guns are outlawed WHO CARES??? I love my guns, will keep carrying my guns even if outlawed. Look at the criminals nowadays in the news... Slap on the wrist. "Timeout". Murderers getting out after 7 years just to go out on street and sell drugs. So obviously breaking the law means nothing now. Can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Maybe if there wasn't such high demand for drugs, it wouldn't pay as much and paroled convicts would have to get a respectable job, like mcdonalds. Oh, that's right, mcdonalds probably wouldn't hire them. Now what?

democracy is like Two Wolfs deciding on what's for dinner, and One Well Armed sheep ready to contest the results...

Actually majority doesn't rule in this country, laws do. We are not a democracy. If you liberals would ever say the Pledge of Allegiance you would know that you are pledging to the flag and the Republic, for which it stands.

Chris what you allude to is correct. I too will become a law breaker should this come about.

Steve, if you have ever worked you know the law requires you to pay out of each pay check a portion to cover disability and retirement for Social Security insurance benefits; has been since the 1930s. You've benefitted from this law. And if you own an automobile you are required by law to buy insurance. If you hunt or fish you buy license. If you have the incentive to own a business you buy a license and are required to buy insurance. You benefit from these. Your Republican majority in Montgomery and the Senate in Washington agree with these laws. If you " never dreamed Congress would be able to make Americans buy..." then you were asleep! When you wake up you'll see you are being played like a cheap fiddle.

NA hit the nail on the head the southern man HAS NO REPRESENTATION so what do we do stand by and take it on the chin, or............

Just because the majority believes a certain way, does not mean their beliefs and logic are correct. I could name several instances in the past where the minority was the righteous side and because they continued to fight, they overcame or had help enough to do so. I'm not saying that all republicans/conservatives are right (I being one myself), I'm just saying that the idea that the majority is right just because they are the majority is a horrible one on which to rely.

Why didn't anyone address the larger issue with this letter from Judy? The fact that her logic is wrong. It only takes a two-thirds majority in the House and Senate and ratification by 38 states to pass an amendment. Although it is very unlikely to happen a lone state holding out wouldn't keep an amendment from passing. Can you do a fact check before you write a letter to the editor?

Joe, think about what you said, when you pay into social security you are likely to get much or all of that money back. You are not forced to drive a car, you are not forced to hunt or fish, and you are not forced to own a business, but you WILL be forced to buy health insurance, if you don't you will be fined. This is the first time in our history that the government has FORCED the American people to buy something whether we want it or not. Sorry to burst your bubble.

This president doesn't need two thirds majority or 38 states, his staff and the military are willing to by pass any constitutional laws to do what he wants to do, regardless of the constitution. Very likely his predecessor will carry on his values or he just will not step down and become dictator. Were very close to that now.
