This is really incredible that the city is going to do this on their own and save us taxpayers so much money by do so. It's easy to understand the architects obvious surprise and statement of how "unusual" it is for the City of Athens, actually unheard of on a project of this size would be a better term, will do its own construction on a public facility. It is a direct slap in the face to every tax paying contractor, subcontractor, supplier and vendor in the area that their hard earned tax dollars will be used against them in the name of saving money. Don't you find it odd that the city has enough individuals working for it on a daily basis to stop their "everyday" jobs and begin construction on a city hall building? Where can it be proven, at any level, that the city will save "hundreds of thousands of dollars". It is a completely false statement that the city saved about $700,000 during the contruction of prior projects and it cannot be backed up through normal accounting practices. This will be managed by two individuals whom have never had any formal training anywhere near the realm of construction. I guess that any Tom, Dick or Harry can supervise construction projects for the city of Athens....Qualifications not needed. Was the public not informed of some of the major issues that happened during the construction of the last fire station when the roof was not properly braced and was blown completely off the building. Do they not realize that all of the liability falls on the city(taxpayers) if anything goes wrong. Why would our city leaders put so much of the burden on the taxpayers? Why do these falsehoods of saving tax payer money on projects continue to be thrown around as facts? How can a city be saving this much money on projects, but yet need higher tax rates from its people? How can the city continue to employee this many "spare" workers that moonlight as construction workers?
