Athens wins big to earn top seed in 5A, Area 16

Destiny Bailey poured in 19 points and Jasmin Lucas delivered a well-rounded performance, sending Athens High past Muscle Shoals 54-25 Monday night.

The win gives Athens (12-12) the Class 5A, Area 16 tournament’s top seed.

Lucas gave Athens a strong performance, finishing with 12 points, eight assists and five rebounds. Alliyah Smith added five points with eight rebounds and two blocked shots.

Shana Sherrod led Muscle Shoals with nine points.

R.A. Hubbard 59, Hatton 54: Alex Gholston finished with a game-high 20 points, helping the Chiefs (13-3) overcome a four-point halftime deficit.

Including Gholston, R.A. Hubbard had four players reach double figures in scoring. Alexandria Mason finished with 14, while Oresha Sherrod tossed in 13 and Tarika Bowman added 10.

Boston Claborn almost recorded a triple-double for Hatton, scoring seven points while grabbing 11 rebounds and recording 10 assists.

Sydney Terry paced the Hornets with 15 points and six rebounds, while Mariah Cantrell finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Decatur Heritage 65, St. Bernard 35: The Eagles used a dominant second half to pull away, outscoring the Saints 39-11 during the final two quarters.

Maddie Vinton paced Decatur Heritage (16-9) with 29 points and six rebounds, while Bekah Voss finished with 10 points, seven steals, five assists and four rebounds. Peyton Barthel added 10 points for the Eagles.

Amee Colvin led St. Bernard with 13 points.

Lexington 46, Tanner 27: Lexington closed out Class 2A, Area 15 play with a win to claim the tournament’s top seed.

Tanner (9-12, 3-3 in Area 15) finishes in a tie with Hatton for the second seed.

Sydney Houston led Tanner with 10 points, while Aaliyah Fletcher scored seven and Kelsey Houston added five.

Haven Albright paced Lexington with 14 points, while Savannah Stults tossed in 12.

Boys

Athens 59, Muscle Shoals 42: Nathanial Potts and Trey Potts each scored 12 points as Athens beat Muscle Shoals in the Class 5A, Area 16 finale.

The Golden Eagles (18-7, 6-0 in Area 16) led 29-15 at the half.

Debo Reeder’s 12 points paced Muscle Shoals (7-14, 1-5).

Danville 64, Falkville 61: Patrick Doherty poured in 20 points to lead Danville past Falkville.

Justin Morgan finished with 16 points for Danville (17-11), which led 35-27 at halftime. Andres Cordova added 10 points for the Hawks.

Aaron Estes led Falkville with 16 points, while Travis Cole and Canaan Smith each scored 12.

Decatur Heritage 64, St. Bernard 35: Tyde Coffey recorded a double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the Eagles.

Jacob Crews finished with 12 points and eight rebounds for Decatur Heritage, which led 28-21 at halftime. Lee Godwin added 11 points for the Eagles.

Sean Moriarty scored 16 to lead St. Bernard.

Tanner 53, Lexington 35: Greg Maclin finished with a game-high 23 points to lead top-ranked Tanner as it closed out Class 2A, Area 15 play unbeaten.

The Rattlers (18-2, 6-0 in Area 15) led 28-17 at halftime.

Jace Haggermaker tossed in 10 points for Tanner, while Desmond Love added seven.

Ethan Gray led Lexington with 11 points.

The Rattlers host Class 6A No. 10 Austin tonight.

Hatton 49, R.A. Hubbard 44: Hatton took the lead for good midway through the fourth quarter as the Hornets held on to beat R.A. Hubbard and earn a sweep of the season series.

Ty Terry scored all 15 of his points in the first half to help Hatton open up a 30-23 lead. But with Terry in foul trouble in the third quarter, Hubbard stormed back to take a 37-35 lead. Laron Cooper scored eight points in the final quarter to spark the Hornets to the win.

Cooper finished with 15 points and Reed Gillespie added 11 for Hatton (14-7). John Ownes paced Hubbard with 14 points and Tevin Ray scored 10.
