Legendary Alabama coach Paul “Bear” Bryant moved into second in career major-college football victories after the NCAA stripped the late Joe Paterno of 111 wins today.
Former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden now holds the record for the Football Bowl Subdivision with 377 wins recognized by the NCAA.
In the combined FBS and Football Championship Subdivision rankings, Grambling's Eddie Robinson now is first with 408 victories. Paterno had been credited with 409.
The NCAA forced Penn State to vacate 112 victories from 1998-2011, only one of which hadn’t been credited to Paterno. That left Paterno with 298 career victories and dropped him from first to fifth on the all-time list.
John Gagliardi of Division III Saint John's University (Minn.) holds the all-division record with 484 wins entering this season, his 64th.
1. Bobby Bowden, 377
2. Paul “Bear” Bryant, 323
3. Pop Warner, 319
4. Amos Alonzo Stagg, 314
5. Joe Paterno, 298
