ROGERSVILLE — Police are trying to determine who is responsible for vandalizing the town’s oldest cemeteries, officials said.

Rogersville Police Chief Terry Holden said vandalism was discovered Monday at the Liberty Cemetery on Lee Street.

According to town officials, the cemetery dates back to 1818.

“It sounds like whoever is responsible just went in and tried to tear things up,” Rogersville Mayor Richard Herston said. “It’s sad that someone would do something like this.”

Rogersville police officer Mark White said one tombstone was broken in half and others were damaged. A portion of a rock wall that surrounds the cemetery also was damaged.
