It may not even be Thanksgiving yet, but lights are going up all around the Shoals and the first Christmas events are starting to take place.
At the LaGrange College Site Park, Christmas in the Country will be held Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
“All the log cabins are decorated for the season, and they go all out with a lot of traditional greenery and garlands so it’s a great time to visit the complex of pioneer cabins on the mountain,” said Ninon Parker, director of marketing at Colbert County Tourism. “It’s really a fun time for a family to take a ride into the country and experience an old-fashioned Christmas.”
Christmas in the Country will feature vendors selling crafts, decorations and baked goods. There will be a photo booth with Santa Claus and hayrides.
Louise Lenz, an officer in the LaGrange Living Historical Association, said the bake sale is an important part of the event.
“Our fundraiser is the bake sale every year,” she said. “It helps keep the park operating. We have the bake sale in anticipation that people will come buy the goods for the Thanksgiving holiday.”
Lenz suggested getting to the park early to get the best selection of baked goods.
The event is free, but donations are accepted to help with park upkeep.
Guests who have been to Christmas in the Country before, can expect to see a different set of decorations adorning the park and its log cabins.
“If you’ve been before, do come back and see the interior decorating because every room is different and new,” Lenz said. “We’re using more natural items than we have in the past.”
The park, filled with rustic log cabins and traditional Christmas decorations, make it a good event to take the whole family to.
“They have been hosting this for a number of years now, and it’s always popular and well attended and something the community looks forward to,” Parker said. “The Christmas season lends itself well to family-friendly activities. The homespun atmosphere of the LaGrange College Park is a perfect setting for a holiday event.”
