PRICEVILLE — It took overtime and clutch shot after clutch shot from the senior leader, but Danville High’s boys have made the Morgan County tournament finals.
The Hawks defeated Brewer 53-51 to set up an all-small school final today. Danville will face top-seeded West Morgan at 7 p.m.
“This is big, not just from a program standpoint,” said first-year Danville head coach Scott Ellis, whose team is now 15-10.
“It’s big for the community. Basketball is big in Danville, and it ’s big to get to the finals.”
Justin Morgan — a 5-foot-8 senior — managed a game-high 29 points. Five times in the second half and overtime combined, he hit a shot that either put Danville ahead or tied it.
The biggest came at the end of regulation. Brewer took a 46-44 lead with Coty Benitez sank a 3-pointer with 13.9 seconds to play. But Morgan drew a foul with 6.7 seconds left and made both foul shots to tie it.
In the extra period, Brewer (6-17) opened with a basket from Austin Morris, but Danville got two free throws from Patrick Doherty with 2:20 to play and a foul shot from Morgan with 1:05 left for a 49-48 lead.
Danville never gave up the lead after that.
“Justin is a competitor,” Ellis said. “He’s a smaller guy but he plays with a lot of competitive spirit. But at the end of the day, he’s a team player, and it doesn’t matter to him what his statistics are — he wants to win.”
Brewer got 23 points from Benitez.
