The Decatur City School Board today refused to adopt measures required by a law the state Legislature passed in 2012.
The law, known as the school board governance act, requires boards to adopt a code of conduct for school board members by April 1.
To meet the deadline, Decatur school board members held a special meeting this morning.
Some called the bill insulting, saying their own ethics and the system’s existing rules already require them to do things that are tougher than the state requirements.
“This is a backdoor way to put power in Montgomery and I don’t like it,” board member Dwight Jett said.

breakin' the law! lock em up!
What are they hiding?
YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TELL US WHAT TO DO! New school? What new school? Nothing to see here - move along.
What a totally misleading headline! Good job, DD, for trying to create news on a newsless event.
Huh? I don't get this article at all. What law did they refuse to comply with? The code of conduct for board members? The article says they had a special meeting to comply with it and they already have one in place. I am so confused.
Maybe Dwight Jett can sit in court and make faces at the opposing attorney like I watched him do a couple of years ago. SUCH level of maturity on this turkey!
Jett is a lawyer????? Hey Greg, tell us how this article is bad or misleading. Give us the rest of the story.
DCS has had one of the best Code of Conduct policies in the State for years.
The entire policy manual is excellent and is viewed by many systems as the standard / pattern for other systems.
If the Board majority has reservations on the state mandates, I doubt Jett had any influence over the decision.
This issue will certainly be resolved by April 1. :)
