Ditching tax pledge

An important trend is developing in national politics that should spread to Alabama.

Several prominent Republicans have signaled their recognition that their first loyalty must be to their constituents, not to an anti-tax pledge they signed for lobbyist Grover Norquist.

Among those with the courage to speak out: U.S. Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga.; Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.; Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn.; and Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y.

None of these officials are saying an increase in taxes is a good thing. They are, however, acknowledging that effective leadership precludes taking possible solutions off the table. America faces thorny problems, and our leaders need flexibility in solving them.

Nowhere has the Norquist pledge been more out of step or more damaging than in Alabama.

Most of the state’s elected federal officials signed the pledge, even though Alabama disproportionately benefits from increased national revenue. For every dollar in federal taxes Alabama raises, it gets $1.67 back. That’s not proof that federal taxes should go higher, but it suggests the issue is more complex for poor states such as Alabama that benefit heavily from federal expenditures.

Alabama’s elected state officials are especially vocal in their anti-tax positions. Our lowest-in-the-nation taxes, however, have not resulted in growth. At $34,880, the state’s per capita income is 42nd in the nation, about the same as it has been for a decade. The state’s poverty rate is perpetually high and its budget deficiencies are chronic. Political influence means that many of those with the highest income pay the least to support state government.

Tax increases are never ideal, but sometimes the consequences of not raising them are worse.

Can't wait to see the rabid responses to this op-ed! Gonna be some tripped circuit breakers from the usual conservative suspects today. Gonna be fun to sit back and watch this one! LOL

Sounds as if Joe felt a tingle run up his leg after reading the opinion of a writer that is of little importance to the rest of us.

Tax the newspapers.

" For every dollar in federal taxes Alabama raises, it gets $1.67 back." I always like these comparisons.Of course the same people who paid the original dollar in taxes are also the people who paid the sixty seven cents in federal taxes......DUH

And yet the Democrats have failed to budge on cuts and reforms to save Medicare or SS. Will we feed the fire once again without doing anything to stop its unsustainable growth. Will the Daily condemn the Democrats for failing to address the clear projections of the growth on the National Debt. I eagerly await the editorial slamming the Democrats for failing to sit down at the table and deal with the real problem.

Veneesa, tell your Granny what cuts you plan for her.

Tell her you love millionaires more than her.

Bubba laughs at stupid

I think bubba has consumed too much cornbread and buttermilk.

Hey Vaneesa, when you talk to Granny also tell her how obamacare stripped away hundreds of millions of dollars from medicare payments to doctors and hospitals that take care of the elderly like her to fund medicare for some working poor and a whole bunch of deadbeats who have paid little to nothing into the system. Also tell her about the free clinics that obamacare has already set up at heavy farming areas. No ID required for care.

Taxes will be raised. Budget cuts won't be made (except to the military, which the Libs hate anyway). Our debt won't be reduced. We'll borrow more money. And taxes will be raised again. There is not enough wealth in this country to keep up with spending ideas that come out of Washington. Libs are willfully ignorant of any economic knowledge.

Vaneesa, a wise woman once told me not to debate stupid people because you will have to lower yourself to their level and then stupid will win because they have more experience. Well lies and Clifton uses FOX TV station lying points.

Bubba loves Grannies and Gramps

Vaneesa hates her family for misspelling Vanessa on her birth certificate.

Bubba, you're wrong. But you're wrong so often, you should be used to it. I actually do research and examine political history. The Utopia that you and the DD long for doesn't exist. Never has, never will. The moochers can only sponge off the Producers for so long. Then there is nothing left to take. Enjoy it while it lasts, though.

Vaneesa hates her family for misspelling Vanessa on her birth certificate.

here is a great plan just for chuckles, knowing full well the liberals aren't interested. I wish I had thought of this.

Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, regressive, Marxists, and Obama supporters, et al:

We have stuck together since the late 1950s for the sake of the kids, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has clearly run its course.

Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right for us all, so let's just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to

irreconcilable differences and go our own way.

Here is a model separation agreement:

1. Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by land mass, each taking a similar portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that, it should be relatively easy. Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides had such distinct and disparate tastes.

2. We don't like redistributive taxes, so you can keep them.

3. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU.

4. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA, and the military.

5. We'll take the nasty, smelly oil industry and you can go with wind, solar, and bio-diesel.

6. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore, and Rosie O'Donnell. You are, however, responsible for finding a bio-diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them.

7. We'll keep capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart, and Wall Street.

8. You can have your beloved lifelong welfare dwellers, food stamps, homeless homeboys, hippies, druggies, and illegal aliens.

9. We'll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, greedy CEO's and rednecks.

10. We'll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood ..

11. You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us.

12. You can have the peace-niks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we'll help provide them security.

13. We'll keep our Judeo-Christian values.

14. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism, political correctness, and Shirley McLain. You can also have the U.N., but we will no longer be paying the bill.

15. We'll keep the SUV's, pickup trucks, and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find.

16. You can give everyone healthcare if you can find any practicing doctors..

17. We'll continue to believe healthcare is an earned luxury and not a right.

18. We'll keep "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "The National Anthem."

19. I'm sure you'll be happy to substitute "Imagine", "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing", "Kum Ba Ya," or "We Are the World".

20. We'll practice trickledown economics and you can continue to give trickle up poverty your best shot.

21. Since it often so offends you, we'll keep our history, our name and our constitution and our flag.

In the spirit of friendly parting, I'll bet you answer which one of us will need whose help in 15 years.

Sincerely,

John J. Wall

Law Student and an American

P.S.: Also, please take Ted Turner, Sean Penn, Martin Sheen, Barbara Streisand, and Jane Fonda with you.

P.S.S..: And you won't have to "Press 1 for English" when you call our country.

**If you can't stand behind our Military, Please feel free to stand in front of them! **

"bubba laughs at stupid" he must laugh everytime he opens his mouth......

Bubba called me a liar.I don't hold it against him. He's just an ignorant lib. What can I say? ..................LOL

Farntipi - Here's a letter for you.

Dear Americans:

I mourn the demise of the Republican Party. We need a vibrant two-party system to keep America free and strong. With the state of affairs in this country, the 2012 Presidential election should have been an easy win for the Grande Old Party. Instead, they shot themselves in the foot.

Sadly, it doesn't appear that anything will be learned from the injury either. So, here's a list of what they must do to remain a viable force on the national level.

Become inclusive, not exclusive. There aren't enough white, middle-age men to carry the party forward. Reach out to women and minorities and include their needs in the party platform.

Understand the private sector and the government must form a partnership to solve major issues, such as health care and a living wage. The "us vs. them" mentality must go.

Get honest about capitalism. In today's world, a CEO's goal is to generate profits and increase shareholder return. This does not necessarily translate into job creation.

Help create a livable wage for all Americans. The business owner goes bankrupt when his customer base can no longer afford his product.

Reproductive rights must not be an acid test for membership in any political party. This is a matter of personal conscience and must not be politicized.

Get your heads out of the sand on immigration reform.

Stop listening to right-wing extremists. They don't have the answer any more than left-wing radicals do.

It is in everyone's best interest that the Republican Party return to its compassionate roots and embrace its Lincolnian ideals. If not, let this letter serve as its epitaph.

PETER D. MYER

"S", I don't believe I read "republican" anywhere in the previous post. I believe that is was meant to be something people call "sarcasm".

The DD and the liberal media keep mentioning republicans but not democrats. Is it because four years without a budget doesn't matter and you actually think communism will work? Towing the party line? Afraid to face the facts, keep borrowing and spending to keep up the nanny state?

Fartnipi - Sarcasm? Oh, sorry. My bad.

no problem "S"...I just thought it was funny.

At least the Washington Post and USA Today are calling on Democrats to address SS, Medicare, and Medicaid as primary drivers of the budget problems.

Vaneesa, I hope ole O'Bubba doesn't get wind of that news. O'Bubba love liberal media. O'Bubba also love Fox news so he can get real news, LOL. O'Bubba love spending other people's money.
