MONTGOMERY — An Alabama lawmaker who recently left the Democratic Party said Friday he didn't originate but may have forwarded an email that contained offensive language about President Barack Obama and Democratic U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi.
Randolph County Democratic Party Executive Committee member Mellie Parrish of Lineville said state Rep. Richard Laird of Roanoke recently sent her the email. She said it arrived shortly before Laird announced earlier this week that he was leaving the Democratic Party to become an independent.
A copy of the email provided to The Associated Press contains a picture of Obama giving Pelosi a kiss on the cheek. It implies the president is a Muslim and includes a derogatory reference to Pelosi's appearance. Obama is a Christian.
Laird said he did not originate the email, but may have forwarded it to his friends
He said he doesn't like the policies of the president or Pelosi and that his disagreement with Democratic Party politics is the reason he switched to an independent. The party, he contends, has moved to the left. Laird said no party officials asked him to leave.
Parrish said she has had some disagreements with Laird over legislation but isn't sure why he sent her the email.
"Everybody who knows me knows that I'm a huge President Obama supporter," Parrish said, adding she was offended by the email.
"How are we going to teach our children about respect if we don't show respect to our president?" she said.
A copy of the email provided to AP shows it was sent to several Republicans in the state House of Representatives, including Speaker Mike Hubbard, who said he had not seen it.
House Minority Leader Craig Ford, a Democrat from Gadsden, said he did not see the email until after Laird had announced he was leaving the party. He found the email offensive.
"It's very distasteful," Ford said. He said even those who disagree with the president "should respect the position."

WHY RESPECT THE POSITION? THE POSITION DOESN"T RESPECT US
Around in circles you go, Anthony.
Just like every democrat respected Bush??? Notice the writer had to tell us obammy is a Christian! If obammy is a Christian, then I am the queen of England!!!
Why Anthony? Because nothing is to be gained by being disrespectful, because we are supposed to live in a civilized society, because our society adheres to a majority rule, because authority is to be respected, because we should teach our children to respect authority, because we should want our enemies to know that citizens of our Country are UNITED against them, because the golden rule still holds true...should I go on?
It never ceases to amaze me that the same people who complain about thugs, "entitlement folk", and a general lack of discipline in this Country are the same people who exhibit the very behaviors contributing to these problems. "R" is a prime example, rather than set an example, he/she uses the bad behavior of others to justify his/her own bad behavior.
why is everyone so "offended" by something they disagree with? this country is done, sad.
I was brought up to believe that "respect" was "earned".............It does not come with an office or position.................You cannot demand it..........Regardless of who or what you are.............as a veteren I "respect" the office of the presidency........because it is the house of the people......But I do not respect the man currently living there.
Come on Daily, show the picture from the email. If it were Bush, you would.
I believe we all have a certain level of respect we owe each other as humans sharing the same planet. However, a person can also prove they are undeserving of that respect through their actions.
If a person of authority believes differently from me, or pushes an agenda or idea that I believe to be wrong, I have no reason to disrespect them for that difference. However, should that person maintain a track record of doing things that benefit those who benefit him, doing things that appeal to the entitled majority because it makes his/her life easier, things that show financial irresponsibility, and flip-flopping between ideals to suite the going trend of the time, I have no reason to respect that person. The vast majority of our political leaders fall under one or more of these categories.
I will respect someone who stands for what they believe in and is steady regardless what the majority thinks. I've said it a couple times already and I'll say it again. The majority is not always on the right side of the fence. Several times in history has the minority had to stand for what is right against those in the majority who would have it differently. If we can't stand for what we believe in, we will fall for anything.
I will respect the law for what it is. I will respect an officer of the law; because, he is supposed to be the enforcer and embodiment of the law. I do not have to respect those who create the law if I do not believe in the law or why the law was created. I also do not have to respect those who abuse a law through loopholes and technicalities. That is one of my inalienable rights and no one can take that from me. I will respect those who I deem respectable, no one outside of that. No one has the right to demand respect from me or my family.
There are always a million excuses for inappropriate behavior but as an adult you should have enough life experience to know that respect between peers is earned; respect for authority is given. The police does not have to respect you and make you feel comfortable and make sure you like them, neither does your boss/supervisor. You will respect the police if you don't want to go to jail and you will respect your boss if you want to keep your job. And the same should apply to President. If you don't like the President of the United States (President Barack Obama) and you are displeased and feel disrespected because of the the way he runs this country then you have every right to move to another country.
can no one take a joke anymore? (I already know the answer)
