Former UA president explains quick departure

TUSCALOOSA (AP) — Former University of Alabama President Guy Bailey says he resigned because his ill wife would drive herself to meet the social obligations of being a president's wife and that would put her life at risk.

Bailey told al.com that he could not allow his wife to do that. Bailey's wife has battled cancer and has complications from surgery that have impaired her ability to absorb nutrients in food. Bailey said her health and her limitations were understood at Texas Tech University, where he served as president before moving to Alabama. But he said there was a mistaken expectation by some at Alabama that his wife would carry out some social duties.

Bailey resigned in late October after 58 days on the job.

and he couldnt afford a driver or something like that at about $10-15 an hour? there were literally thousands of students who would have done it. and he made, what, $150K a year.

that is a BS reason. i dont like this guy for continuing to lie to the state and university of alabama.

I call BS. the university could provide a driver or he could hire one.

I especially don't like that he negotiated a contract with a LARGE payout at resignation and then promptly resigned. BS, for sure!!!

I don't think that is the type of drive he is speaking of.

Took BAMA to the bank..very clever! And wrong....

He did not mean literally to drive herself, he meant that she would over do and put her health at risk. I for one applaud him for putting his wife's health before anything else.
