Hartselle liquor denied again
Daily Photo by Gary Cosby Jr.
Rebekah McDonald and Roger Jeffords display signs Tuesday hoping to get Hartselle residents to vote no on alcohol sales. The opponents of alcohol prevailed.

Hartselle again voted down its long-fought alcohol proposal, electing to deny liquor sales inside the city by a vote of 3,478 to 3,066 tonight.

WELL PRAISE THE LORD!!

Way to go Hartselle, since Priceville went wet we will now be giving much needed revenue to TWO neighboring cities... Can't wait to see how they plan to creatively pay for the laundry list of underfinanced projects we have going... Fan-freakin-tastic...

YES, AMEN, PRAISE THE LORD, THERE IS POWER IN PRAYER

Doesn't the Lord take care of people in other communities?? Pray for ALL people to not drink, avoid all the unnecessary loss of families, friends and others because of alcohol..........then you got my vote !

Decatur Alcohol Tax FUnd would like to thank Hartselle residents for their continued financial support.

Robert have you driven out Bethel Rd. lately? Does that look like a city that is in a financial crisis? Our city has some of the highest paid workers in the area to include police, fire, and development. Just get off the tax revenue and admit that you just do not want to drive more than a mile or two to get your liquor. Hartselle has not needed alcohol sales so far to flourish and we do not need them now. I am also sure that Hartselle will not miss the 10,000 dollars a year that will go to Priceville alcohol sales.

I'm not so sure that Hartselle needs a police force. Since alcohol contributes to all crime, they should be crime free!

First of all Chris did I say anything about the school?? But since you brought it up try this on for size. Have you ever built a house? Unless you are independently wealthy, did you pay cash for it when you built it or did you FINANCE it?? Same thing with the new school... Oh it's being built alright, and it looks fancy, but sooner or later the mortgage has to be paid!! and THAT is where we are going to have problems, because the blessed school isn't the only thing being done on credit... They can only borrow from Peter to pay Paul for so long, and when Paul is homeless and living in a box they will be knocking on YOUR door. How much more of your hard earned money shall we put down as your donation to the cause??

Thank you Hartselle, and now Priceville will be getting great places to eat.

Don't worry chris they'll just raise our sales taxes to help keep your town the way you want it. Hartselle wants everything at someone else's expense. You need to look at your neighbor because their is a lot of people that buy their liquor at the bottom of the hill and then vote no. Hartselle has a lott of two faced hypocrits in their town.

GREAT. Keep those tax dollars coming to Decatur. This is why Hartselle wll always be 2nd fiddle to Decatur.

I Don't See How You Can Say That Hartselle Will Always Be Second, Hartselle Has The Best Schools, a Lot Better Than Decatur, They Did It Without The Liquor, We Don't Want Or Need The Bars And Nightclubs, And The Crime That Comes With It

That's what I would expect a runner-up to say. I.E. "Second"

2nd fiddle to Decatur. HAHA. Who has a better school system academically? not even close. Hartselle has 3 state championships in the past year. Decatur has how many? The only thing Decatur does better than Hartselle is committ crime. Keep your alcohol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Compare apples to apples and then I will listen.

Anthony & Linda, how many National Merit Honors Finalists did you have recently? None....you say? Well Decatur schools had 5. Hartselle schools superiority is a myth. And as far as affording the new school.....you raised your tax to get it and the tax will NEVER go back down. No local school system has more "special needs kids" than Decatur. If the other school system catered to special needs kids like Decatur, they would all be worse off!

Not trying to gloat but I find it amusing that I could yank something out of mid air (without any supporting evidence), make an obvious ridiculous comment about it (jokingly I might add) and turn the Hartselle Bible thumpers focus of this article 180 degrees from Biblical revelation of defeating an alcohol agenda to one of self righteous gloating. I will be the first to admit I am not Peter or Paul . . . I love a cold beer as much as anyone, however, it amazes me that the mighty army of the children of God spend most of their time either shining their armor or fighting one another.

Just because a person votes NO to becoming a wet city, doesn't mean that they don't drink. It just means that they don't want all the neon colored night clubs and liquor stores on their streets. Hartselle is doing ok.

Decatur schools are not the problem. It is the city council that is the problem.

ALCOHOL And Drugs causes more crime, THEY ARE THE PROBLEM

Yikes....The city has spent over a million dollars developing prime property at the 65 exit. Gonna need alcohol sales before any serious restaurant (other than a cracker barrel) would even consider bringing their business to Hartselle. That was a huge investment that would have great benefit from alcohol sales. I wouldn't be as concerned with loosing minuscule tax dollars to Priceville or Decatur for people travelling there to buy their booze rather not giving yourself the opportunity to benefit from economic development from which alcohol sales promotes. Decatur would love to keep getting the Chilis, Olive Gardens, Moes, Longhorns, etc. These are the businesses that provide the jobs and generate the tax money. Hartselle will never see this type of development if they remain dry....period. Its the choice the citizens made to stay dry but I'm sure if they understood the ramifications of their vote for economic development.
