Runoff elections
Kyle wins mayor's race; Ard captures council seat
Daily photos by John Godbey
Don Kyle receives a good luck hug from Jamie Pugh, a lifelong friend of his family, at the Holiday Inn, while Carl Cole checks the voting numbers at The Magnolia Room, and tells his wife Kate, "...it looks like we are going to come up a little short."

Don Kyle was elected Decatur's new mayor tonight, capturing 56 percent of the vote.

Kyle had 5,587 votes to Cole's 4,432, a 1,155-vote margin.

Voters in District 5 chose Chuck Ard over Allison Blackburn Akins for their council seat.

Ard received 1,597 votes (64 percent) to Akins' 913.

Kyle, who will take office Nov. 5, had a previous four-year term as mayor that ended in 2008.

Current mayor Don Stanford was on the Aug. 28 ballot but didn't finish as one of the top two vote recipients and qualify for the runoff.

I guess people have forgot about voting him out of office 4 years ago... I feel sorry for the people of Decatur

Joe B, Kyle won every precinct four years ago ,but one and that's where he lost the election as I recall !

Too much liberal Dem in that Cole boy. Just look at the signs up there at the Obama law firm at 4th and Moulton.

congradulations don kyle....so glad you will be our new mayor!

Decatur will remember soon enough why we voted him out a few years ago. Sad day for Decatur.

Judys husband

Congrats Don .............I really hope you can do something with the city council. We didn't have any luck voting those goof balls out.

Congratulations to Don Kyle.

Maybe this is the first of many losses for obama supporters and will conclude with obama himself losing in November.

Congrats Don Kyle.

Perhaps the DD can leave Don Stanford out of their pitiful publication now. Only the liberal jerks they are would continue to mention he was not in the runoff. Like we didn't know that?! Now, Kyle, be better than before and back up your promises.

I think what cost Cole the election was too much emphasis on the "part-time mayor" thing. He had good ideas, I just wasn't sure he was committed enough to implement them.

Jimmy, the problem is that I can't recall one good reason why they vote Kyle out last time. I can predict what will happen again. Kyle will once again bring in businesses as he did last time, but Billy Jackson will try to block anything positive that Kyle attempts (see Sweetwater development as a prime example).

I'm really excited Don will be back in office to move this city forward again!! Having worked for him on his campaign, he is

an incredibly knowledgeable, personable and dedicated believer in Decatur, Al and will serve every district to the best of

his ability!!! His sole purpose to fight to get this job back is his love for our city!!!!

sweetwater was a joke.... and still is....

Sweetwater stalled because don Kyle couldn't make a decision. He wasted time. Saying anything else is revisionist history.

like I said, in about a month you all that voted for Kyle will remember why. 4,432 residents did not forget.

Jimmy & William seem to have a problem with facts. New York banks and escalating corporate welfare requests are why BassPro isn't here. Before they were done requesting, they wanted what made no sense and would have resulted in tax increases. In the long run, this may prove to be the best thing. With BassPro on the way to Huntsville, our retail bleed could be escalated.

Is Charles Kirby still unemployed?

Don Kyle and the new city council with Ard and Kirby will do our community well. Notice Calhoun will attempt to be annexed into Decatur? It did not get announced until after Kyle won.

Calhoun has nothing to do with Kyle. Don Stanford made it happen along with Wally Terry. You will rue the day you brought DONothing Kyle back to power.

I guess Jimmy & William are part of the crowd that voted Kyle out and Stanford in last time. Nice going guys. How did that work out? It must be pretty embarrising to publicly admit that you were responsible for allowing Stanford to come in and damn near ruin this city. And if I recall, Stanford only got 679 votes total this last time. Wondering how the other 677 people feel about their obvious horrible decision?

"Ruin this city?" Have you seen everything that has come here since Stanford become Mayor? Stanford gave us unprecedented economic growth by letting smart people do smart things. He cleaned up city hall and no one gives him any credit for that. Art college - Stanford. Kohl's- Stanford. E-Center - Stanford. Mellow Mushroom - Stanford. Wintzell's - Stanford. GiGi's - Stanford. Second Avenue - Stanford. Beltline Sewer - Stanford. Kyle gets some credit along with Fowler and visitors bureau for Ingalls. But the Pavillion was Stanford. CALHOUN - STANFORD. Calhoun was there when Kyle was Mayor and it still wasn't coming into Decatur. Stanford will leave with more accomplishments than most Mayors and that especially includes Don Kyle.
