Lawrence County racks up 7 medals

OAKVILLE — Lawrence County High won seven of eight possible medals Thursday in the Northwest Alabama High School Cross Country Championship at Indian Mounds Park.

This was the most medals to the host school has won in the race’s eight years.

The 5-kilometer race also featured the Lawrence and Morgan counties championships.

Overall

Lawrence County High boys and girls won the overall championship. Rogers finished second in the girls with Hatton taking third and Hartselle fourth.

The Lawrence County boys have won the race seven of the eight years.

Amy McKelvy of Shoals Christian Academy won the overall girls race with a time 20 minutes and 7 seconds. Allison Jay was second at 20:11 followed by Lexi Burfield (20:25) and Durrana Thomas (20:28) of Lawrence County.

Lawrence County’s Justus Montgomery took first in the boys overall with a time of 16:52. Tate Carden of Athens was second (17:09), followed by Caleb Lipsey (17:20), Kyle Bailey (17:27) and Luke Hopper (17:29), all of Lawrence County.

Lawrence championship

The Lady Devils claimed the Lawrence County championship, and Hatton was second. Burfield, Thomas and Shelton Givens (21:31) paced Lawrence County High, and Bailey Steadman (21:37) of Hatton was fourth.

The Red Devils took four of the top five spots in the boys Lawrence County championship with Montgomery, Lipsey, Bailey and Hopper leading the way. Daniel Dudley (17:42) of Hatton was fifth.

Morgan championship

Hartselle won the boys and girls Morgan County championships with Decatur High finishing second in both races.

Victoria Hardeman of Decatur High won the Morgan girls title with a time of 21:41. She was followed by Taylor Barnett (21:59), Reagan Bowling (22:55) and Tiffany Pittman (23:18) of Hartselle. Emily Smith (23:20) of Decatur High was fifth.

Hartselle’s Aaron Davis won the boys Morgan County championship with a time of 17:54. Ian Yarbrough (18:31) of Decatur High was second, followed by John Paulson (18:36) of Hartselle, Will Lovelace (18:49) of Decatur High and Chase Barnett (18:59) of Hartselle.
