BIRMINGHAM — A prominent Alabama minister charged with murder in his wife's slaying was caught up in a "perfect storm" of personal and professional problems before the shooting, his lawyer said today.
Defense attorney Henry Lagman said the Rev. Terry Greer, 53, had a string of health and other problems.
Authorities said Greer shot his wife, Lisa Greer, and wounded their 18-year-old daughter, Suzanna, who got the weapon away from him and ran to a neighbor's home for help. Greer stabbed himself repeatedly before police arrived, but authorities rushed him to a hospital where he remains.
"It was a perfect storm of personal and professional problems," Lagman said in an interview.
Greer, suspended from his ministerial duties since the shooting, was on medical leave as senior pastor at Gardendale-Mount Vernon United Methodist Church before the killing, police and church officials have said. The church is one of the larger United Methodist congregations in north Alabama. Greer was pastor of First United Methodist Church in Decatur for eight years until June, when the North Alabama Conference appointed him to the Gardendale church.
Doctors discovered heart problems after Greer wrecked his vehicle in October, and he suffered a closed head wound and other injuries in a fall off his deck within days of the accident.
"He's in a very dark place. I think the real question is going to be how he got there," Lagman said.
Lagman said medications linked to Greer's health problems could be a factor in the shootings.
Greer was placed on a ventilator after developing pneumonia while being treated for multiple self-inflicted stab wounds, said Gardendale Police Chief Mike Walker.
A judge approved a request to hold him without bond, Walker said, and the pastor will be taken straight to jail after his release from the hospital.
For now, police are guarding Greer at the hospital around the clock, Walker said.
"We don't have a choice," Walker said. "He's conscious. He could try to rip out everything and try to walk away."
Lagman, who said he has known the Greer family since before Suzanna was born, said the pastor was a loving husband and father before his "stair-step decline" into instability. He recalled attending a birthday party for Suzanna years ago where Greer dressed up as a purple dinosaur.
"I've seen this man in a Barney costume at a birthday party. Anyone who humbles himself by doing that loves his family," Lagman said.
Bill Bostick, former district superintendent in Decatur, has been appointed interim pastor at the Gardendale church.
The Greers' daughter, Suzanna, has been released from the hospital.

Please tell us what meds he was on that caused him to kill his wife and attempt to kill his daughter? What mind altering drugs was he on? What psyche meds was he on that hallucinations was a side effect? I can't wait to hear this one!!! What was the "closed head wound"? What part of the brain was damaged? Come on DD ask the right questions and let's get some answers.....
I agree with Herman. Can't wait to hear the rest of this story. DD please find out more details. Figured they would try to blame this on meds. Figures!
Herman and Jimmy, you two guys are freaks. You two kids act like you're popping popcorn and watching a reality show on TV or it's your own fantasy version of the hunger games. Get a life and stop hiding behind your keyboard.
I don't think any excuse would be justified for murder. The afe ofreasoning begins at age 7. When you do the crime, you do the time. He failed as a pastor too. Teaching God's word and he has to remember that God said. "Thou shalt not kill" or was that not in his Bible?
Sounds like demon possession . . . we are in the last days! Prophecy has been fulfilled, the rapture of the Church could happen at any moment! Be prepared . . .
Don't judge someone if they have mental health issues. Doctors are supposed to help with this!
Why don't we all refrain from judgment until all the facts are known. None choose to have mental problems and who knows what the accident and fall contributed to his mental capacity. I say we should pray for the family that God's will be done and let the law handle the punishment. Keep an open mind folks and don't be so quick to act like you have all the answers. None of US know for sure.
@ Cheryl...why are we freaks? Because we would like to know the mind altering drugs he was prescribed by a doctor that caused these actions? I would like to know, if his attorney is saying medication could be the reason behind this, what medications? Is that being a freak or hiding behind a keyboard? And I have no idea what hunger game is!!!!! If there was a mental illness, when was it first detected? Has he had a Doctor to give a dx of mental illness? Was he on some type of meds for psychosis? If his attorney wants to put out there that his actions could be because of his medications, then list the meds and the potential side effects. Don't say he has heart problems, that makes no sense!
And apparently you must be a member of his church, that simple questions makes you angry. Get use to it, because once he goes to court, I'm sure that Prosecutor is going to ask harder questions than I am.
Never heard of any cardiac medications causing someone to become a psychotic killer! Sounds like his lawyer is leading up to a temporary insanity plea!
He didn't practice what he preached. When you are in a dark place, you reach out to others for help and guidance. Was his situation so terrible that he didn't want church members to know. Was it so bad that he didn't think God would forgive him?
I agree w/ Analytical....but we are to be understanding because he was a preacher? Please! Everyone that claims to be, just might not be. Ask some of the children that have been sexually assaulted by a "preacher".....
Herman this was a AP article not DD.
