Auburn coach Gene Chizik’s mother, Rita, died this morning, an Auburn Athletic Department spokesman confirmed. She was 86.
No other details were released in a statement sent by Auburn spokesman Kirk Sampson shortly before 11 a.m.
“The Chiziks appreciate the prayers and support that have been sent from the Auburn family. We ask that everyone respect the family’s privacy during this difficult time,” Sampson’s statement said.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Coach Chizik and family in the death of his mother, Rita. Thanks to AU Family for lifting up the Chiziks,” Auburn Athletic Director Jay Jacobs tweeted.
In his 2011 book All In: What It Takes to Be the Best, Chizik thanked his mother.
“Rita Chizik, my mother. Thank you for your unconditional love and for providing me with a living example of hard work. I love you with all my heart,” he wrote.

Hope this will wake some people up and see there is more to life than Auburn's wins and losses. Sorry to hear this and prayers with you from an Alabama fan.
