One on one with Athens' Jasmin Lucas
Brennen Smith/Decatur Daily
Athens senior guard Jasmin Lucas.

Though Jasmin Lucas speaks with a soft voice, her time with Athens High girls basketball has been anything but quiet.

Take Monday, for example, when the 5-foot-2 senior scored 12 points with eight assists and five rebounds to spark the Golden Eagles past Muscle Shoals, helping the team take the top seed in the Class 5A, Area 16 tournament.

In her final season, Lucas said she is looking forward to wrapping up her senior year and finding out what happens next. While the weeks count down to the end of the season, she’s also making sure she helps the reserve players develop, so that the team can come back fighting next season.

Decatur Daily sports writer Meredith Qualls sat down with Lucas on Wednesday to answer 10 questions:

Question: Is there anything behind your jersey number, 23?

Answer: My cousin, Tank Beavers, used to play here. He taught me how to play basketball, and he was number 23. He died in a shooting at T.G.I. Friday’s, so that’s why I have that number.

Q: Are there any sports you have never tried, but want to?

A: Tennis. I don’t know why, but I think I could do it. After basketball season I might just try it.

Q: What has been the best part of the season this year?

A: My girls. This is the closest team I’ve ever been on. And winning at Wallace State. We were on a losing season when we won the tournament. It was a big step up for us.

Q: Who is the funniest player on your team? Is that you?

A: No. They laugh at me a lot, but probably Kaitlyn Wise. She is funny.

Q: Do you and you sister, Passion Lucas, practice at home together?

A: On weekends, basically, and Sunday if we don’t have practice. We have a basketball court outside and we have treadmills in the house.

Q: Do you and your sister get along well?

A: On the court, we get along good. Off the court, not at all. I’m the boss. On the court, I’m the point guard, so you have to listen to me to get what we’re trying to accomplish. We have a good two-man game.

Q: Is there anything that coach Eddie Murphree gets on to you about?

A: He gets on to me for reaching. I’m more of a hands-on person, so I see the basketball and want to take it.

Q: Do you have any game day rituals?

A: I like to take the basketball and make a beat with it, and sing a song with it before we go out of the locker room. It’s funny because everybody will start dancing to it and singing to it. It’s like everybody has their own song going.

Q: Do you have a good singing voice?

A: Not at all.

Q: Do you remember the first time you drove a car?

A: My aunt taught me to drive when I was eight. I couldn’t reach the pedal because I’m short. I would sit in her lap, and I’d do the wheel and she’d do the pedal.
