The skinny: Coming off a double-overtime win against rival Hartselle, Austin enters the playoffs with some momentum. Led by Josh Walker’s four touchdowns, the Black Bears overcame a 20-point deficit in the second half. … Led by running back Ira Burch, Pell City boasts an offense that’s averaging 27.3 points per game. Burch accounted for more than 200 all-purpose yards last week in a loss against Tuscaloosa County. … The Panthers are giving up 27 points per game. … The all-time series is tied 1-1.

Defensive lineman LaVante Price suffered a season-ending knee injury, and the Cougars’ top two running backs did not play last week because of injuries. … The all-time series is tied 1-1.

The skinny: Hartselle enters the playoffs in unfamiliar position. For the first time since 2007, the Tigers aren’t a heavy favorite in the opening. Hartselle lost four of its last six games and finished the fourth seed in Region 8. … Hartselle faces a tough test on the road at second-ranked Fort Payne. The Wildcats average 40.2 points per game while giving up 11.5 points. … Hartselle leads the all-time series 3-1.

The skinny: Coming off an idle week, Tanner hopes to begin a second straight run to the Class 2A state title game. … Tanner has not lost a game at Rip Swanner Stadium in three years. … The Rattlers have been the definition of dominant this season, outscoring opponents 453-72. … Tanner safety Greg Maclin and linebacker Fred Rich are UAB commitments, and coach Laron White said he believes the Rattlers’ defense has a few more potential college players. … Sand Rock is averaging 25.1 points game while giving up 20.1. … The all-time series is tied 1-1.

The skinny: Falkville hopes to snap a three-game losing skid this week in the opening round of the playoffs, but the Blue Devils got a tough draw with Pickens County. The Tornadoes are averaging 39.7 points per game. … Falkville is enjoying its best season in more than 20 years. … Led by running back Hunter Woodall, the Blue Devils are making their first postseason appearance since 2006. … Falkville has not won a playoff game since 1999.

The Chiefs are averaging 27.7 points per game, but are giving up 23.6 points. … John Owens is one of the most explosive running backs in the area. He is averaging more than 100 yards per game. … R.A.
