TONIGHT’S GAME

R.A. Hubbard (2-1, 1-1) vs. Hackleburg (2-1, 2-0)

When: Thursday at 7 p.m.

What: Class 1A, Region 8 game

Last season: Hackleburg won 12-7

The skinny: R.A. Hubbard running back John Owens is coming off a six-touchdown performance in a 60-50 win against Phillips-Bear Creek. He ran for five scores and threw a 38-yard touchdown pass. Consistency has been an issue for Hubbard. … The Chiefs struggled to sustain drives in the first two games, and needed a shootout to win last week against Phillips after leading by 16 at halftime … Quarterback Dylan Gallaway and running back Austin Adair lead a Hackleburg offense that is averaging 36.3 points per game. … Hackleburg leads the all-time series 4-3.

FRIDAY’S GAMES

Sparkman (1-2, 1-1) at Austin (3-0, 2-0)

The skinny: Scoring points has not been a problem for Austin. The Black Bears are averaging 39.7 points per game. … Austin is coming off another big, yet balanced, offensive performance. Brandon Watkins and Josh Walker combined for 124 yards on the ground, and quarterback Chris Sparkman 8 of 12 passing for 135 yards, despite playing sparingly in the second half in a 48-7 win at Buckhorn. … Lorenzo James ran for two touchdowns to lead Sparkman past James Clemens 37-26 last week. … Austin leads the series 8-6.

The skinny: Decatur’s defense has been solid. The Red Raiders have forced 10 turnovers and scored two defensive touchdowns in three games. … Running back Josh Matthews is coming off a strong performance where he rushed for 119 yards on 19 carries. … Turnovers have been an issue for Decatur’s offense. The Red Raiders have turned the ball over 12 times through three games, including three turnovers last week in a 21-14 win against Hazel Green. … Florence quarterback Kendrick Doss is enjoying a strong to the season. He ran for two touchdowns and was 13 of 24 passing for 177 yards and a touchdown last week in a 48-42 loss at Bob Jones. … Decatur leads the all-time series 6-1.

The skinny: Top-ranked Hartselle avoided an upset last week at Athens by scoring 16 unanswered points in the fourth quarter, beating the Golden Eagles 23-8. … Blake Slayton led Hartselle offensively with 110 yards and a touchdown on 23 carries, while quarterback Deacon Aldridge completed 19 of 27 passes for 202 yards. … Cullman quarterback Zac Crocker threw five touchdown passes last week in a blowout win at West Point. … At 18 games, Hartselle has one of the state’s longest winning streaks. … One of the area’s oldest football rivalries, Cullman leads the all-time series 40-38-3.

The skinny: For the second time in as many weeks, Athens will face one of the top-ranked teams in Class 5A. Muscle Shoals is ranked No. 2. Athens lost 23-8 to No. 1 Hartselle last week. … Athens receiver Johnnie Anderson had a solid performance against Hartselle, catching five passes for 103 yards and a touchdown. … Led by Dee Liner, an Auburn commit at defensive end, Muscle Shoals has not given up a point through three games. … The Trojans have outscored opponents 129-0, but those teams have a combined 3-6 record. … Athens leads the all-time series 17-5.

The skinny: Lawrence County is coming off consecutive losses to the two top-ranked teams in Class 5A, Hartselle and Muscle Shoals. … In a 53-0 loss last week to Muscle Shoals, Lawrence County was held to 19 yards of total offense in the first half. … Matthew Franks and Dhalquile Eichelberger scored East Limestone’s lone touchdowns last week in a 37-14 loss at Russellville. … Lawrence County leads the all-time series 6-5.

The skinny: Running back Brendon Deberry has been a consistent offensive weapon for Brewer. Because Brewer lost quarterback Weston Pritchett last week to a season-ending injury, Deberry has now stepped into that role and rushed for about 100 yards. … The Patriots are trying to end a 13-game losing skid. … Arab leads the all-time series 20-10.

The skinny: Ardmore is trying for its first 3-1 start since the 2006 season. … Quarterback Garrett Miller led Ardmore offensively last week in a loss to North Jackson. He rushed for 96 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Running backs Zach Ellis and Tyler McCarley have been the Tigers’ top offensive weapons this season. … Randolph is in its third season as a football program.

The skinny: East Lawrence quarterback Terrence Deloney has been one of the area’s top offensive players, averaging more than 250 total yards per game. … Deloney ran for 170 yards and a touchdown and passed for 101 yards and a score last week against Haleyville. … West Limestone’s defense is giving up 56.3 points per game. … Quarterback Caleb McConnell threw a touchdown pass to Steve Romero for the Wildcats’ only score in a loss last week to Brooks. … East Lawrence leads the series 3-1.

The skinny: If top-ranked Tanner has any weaknesses, they haven’t been exposed. The Rattlers are holding opponents to 4.7 points while scoring 38 per game. … Hayden Stephens, Fred Rich and Kyle Shoulders give Tanner a talented stable of running backs. Stephens and Rich are each averaging about 90 yards per game. … The Rattlers have two UAB commitments on their defense in safety Greg Maclin and Rich, a senior linebacker. … Lexington expects to be one of the top teams in Region 8. He rushed for 157 yards and passed for 117 in a win last week against Waterloo.

Woodall is averaging more than 130 yards per game, and Wilemon isn’t far behind. … Quarterback Aaron Estes passed for 156 yards last week in a win against Appalachian. … The Blue Devils, who are off to their best start in years, are averaging 45.7 points per game while holding opponents to 15 points. … Cameron Hallmark and Alex Smeraglia lead a stout Meek rushing attack.
