MOULTON — Players swarmed the court as celebration music came across the sound system.

But really, no cue was needed.

The members of Lawrence County High’s girls basketball team knew the drill. They had experienced this coronation before.

Lawrence County claimed its second straight county title Saturday night, cruising past R.A. Hubbard 64-46 at A.W. Todd Coliseum.

And it hasn’t gotten old — even though this celebration was a little less lively.

“Winning the county is always a goal, especially for us seniors,” tournament MVP Adrien Coffey said. “But we’ve still got more goals out there. If we keep playing like this, I think we can reach them.”

Hard to argue.

Lawrence County (18-6) made this one look easy. The Red Devils opened the game with a 17-2 run and never let up, building a 19-point cushion by halftime.

There’s a reason why. Most of Lawrence County’s starting lineup shined on the championship stage.

Adrien Coffey put together arguably her best performance of the season, pouring in 24 points and grabbing 19 rebounds. Rachel Childress added 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, while Tori McDaniel and Whitney Woodard each finished with eight points.

All bright spots that Red Devils coach Kenny Coffey hopes will continue as his team heads into the postseason tournaments.

“At times, I don’t think we’ve played our best this season,” Kenny Coffey said. “The key is that we got off to a fast start, but we kept our intensity for 32 minutes. That’s what we have to do. If we continue to do that, and play this well, then we’ll be alright.”

Childress agreed.

“We’re starting to play better. I think we all believe that,” she said. “I think winning this, it can carry us down the stretch.”

R.A. Hubbard’s hopes at a comeback took a significant hit when star guard Alex Gholston picked up her third personal foul with 5:44 remaining in the second quarter. She fouled out with 5:56 remaining in the game.

Gholston finished with 12 points. Ashlen McCoy led the Chiefs (10-3) with 16.

“We did a good job with guarding (Oresha) Sherrod, McCoy and Alex,” Kenny Coffey said. “We knew Alex was going to come out in the second half be really aggressive, but we were able to limit her. I’m just happy with our intensity. That’s what we’ve got to have every night.”
