Shoals Christian has big second half to down DHCA
By Justin Graves

TRINITY — Watching miscue after miscue, Shoals Christian coach Patrick Odom walked off the field at halftime with a look of frustration.

Not much was going right, and the Flame appeared primed for an upset.

Then the fourth quarter began.

Daniel Wood and Dustin Covington combined for three touchdowns as Shoals Christian scored 23 unanswered points to rally past Decatur Heritage 36-13 Thursday night.

“We didn’t do much right in the first half,” Odom said. “A lot of that had to do with Decatur Heritage. They had a great game plan and were executing it, and we simply weren’t.”

Decatur Heritage (2-4, 1-2 in Class 1A, Region 8) made its presence known in the first half. Jordan Holland threw an 11-yard touchdown to Sawyer Holland, and Kyle Lasch intercepted a screen pass and returned the ball 21 yards for a score late in the second quarter to tie the score 13-13 at halftime.

“We did play well in the first half,” Decatur Heritage coach Steve Meek said. “And to be honest, at halftime I was little bit upset that we weren’t up by two touchdowns. We had a touchdown called back on a penalty and weren’t able to cash in on some other opportunities. But our guys did get out there and scrap, and they put themselves in good position going into the second half.”

Shoals Christian (4-2, 3-0) poured it on the fourth quarter. Daniel Wood ran for a 6-yard score, and Dustin Covington had touchdown runs for 45 and 21 yards. The Flame also sacked Jordan Holland in the end zone for a safety.

“In the second half, we came out, got our running game going and played the type of football we’re capable of,” Odom said. “We still had too many turnovers and penalties, but we played well enough to win.”

Meek said he continues to see progress with the Eagles.

“This is a good group of Christian boys, and they’ve worked hard to improve,” he said. “We made quite a few mistakes tonight — all things that we can learn from. But we are getting better, and I’m proud of these guys for how they continue to work and play hard for this team.”
