It is unfortunate that we have to borrow money, but that is what you have a savings account for,” said Senate Minority Leader Roger Bedford, D-Russellville. “And hopefully, at the end of this three-year period, the economy will have picked up and it won’t be necessary to borrow any more money.”
I'm sure Bedford' is in agony over using the trust fund money.Gov.Fob James said, if the trust fund was ever used that the goat hill politicians in Montgomery couldn't keep their hands out of it and he was right.Don Juan started the rainy day fund and the rest is history. The schools wouldn't have enough money if they had a money printing machine in every county.
Why do we need an amendment if we have 2.5 billion in savings? Because they are using the interest from the 2.5 billion as part of the funding for General Fund? This is the same old game, fix the funding problem and the budget problems, do what needs to be done, do the right thing! The Alabama Trust Fund represents money the Legislature can not spend and don't have control over, they want us to pass an amendment so they can spend it too.
"Currently, the Alabama Education Trust Fund, which provides money for public education, owes the Alabama Trust Fund about $437 million in rainy day money it must repay, without interest, by 2015. Legislators approved the use of money from the rainy day fund to overcome shortfalls in the education budget."
This is exactly what Fob James said would happen !
How much is it going to cost the state of alabama to vote on this in september? should have waited till november election.
Why on earth is any money being used for the Forever Wild program in times like these? We have wildlife refuges and parks all over the state, yet we are spending oil and gas revenues on land leases.
NO NEW TAXES
