A downtown Decatur gas station was demolished last week to make way for more parking and an eye-catching entrance for a nearby hotel.
The Studio 9 Inn and Suites located near the corner of Johnston Street and Sixth Avenue Southeast plans to add landscaping, LED lighting and possibly a fountain where the former Fuel Zone gas station operated at 110 Sixth Ave. S.E., said Eric Widell, the hotel’s front desk manager.
“We’ve got some really big ideas to beautify the corner,” Widell said. “We really want to turn some heads, and we’re shopping now for the lighting.”
The small gas station was demolished last week, leaving just a gravel parking area. Hotel owners plan to repaint the building and are considering installation a 30-foot fountain to attract visitors, he said.
