Alabama faces immense challenges. The state is desperate for leaders who will confront those challenges and lead the people to solutions.
A few elected officials are engaged in the hard work of state government. Many, though, seem determined to drag the state into a sideshow act that leaves the nation laughing and serious Alabamians despondent.
The first sign that Alabama can expect more of the same came from the “We Dare Defend Our Rights” agenda announced last month by Republicans in the state House of Representatives. With a few responsible proposals mixed in, the thrust of the agenda is misdirection. The theory is that if House leaders can keep fury at President Barack Obama and the federal government sustained at a fevered pitch, no one will notice that state leaders are failing to solve the problems they were elected to solve.
So the GOP announced it would wage an attack on abortion. Many sensible Alabamians oppose abortion, but it has been a constitutional right since 1974. With rallying cries that “they” are trying to take our guns, the House promises to enact “the strongest gun protection provisions in the country.” Yet both the Alabama and U.S. constitutions already protect gun owners, and a Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate shows no inclination to reauthorize a ban on military-style semi-automatic rifles. The House complains bitterly about federal meddling in education, yet Obama has been reducing federal involvement and encouraging states to innovate.
Not one of these measures can accomplish anything. Alabamians elect federal representatives who have the job of passing federal law, within the bounds of the requirements of the U.S. Constitution. No state law or state constitutional amendment is valid if it conflicts with federal law. As much as those in Montgomery may prefer to talk about federal issues, we elected state representatives to solve state issues.
What state representatives will do if they “dare defend our rights” through more unconstitutional laws is drag a poor state into even more costly litigation. Instead of adequately funding schools and roads and courts, they can waste more money on unsuccessful legal battles.
The state politicians hollering about Obama and the federal government want voters to believe the issue is whether federal policies are good or bad.
That is not the issue. Alabama has federal senators and representatives whose job it is to deal with federal policies.
The politicians Alabamians elected to go to Montgomery have neither the power nor the responsibility to influence federal policy. Their jobs are to help one of the poorest states in the nation improve itself.
Every time state politicians start complaining about Obama or federal gun laws or federal abortion rights, one thing is certain: They are trying to keep voters from noticing a failure of state government.

This is a resurgance of the anger over integration, etc. It was especially visible too in the votes against what was referred to as the Lilly Ledbetter amendments to the Equal Pay Act. A flare up of the ERA protest of the 70s. This is sabre rattling that secures our status as a bottom dwelling state. The anti-government sentiments are especially foolish for a region of the state that thrives on TVA, U.S. Army, NASA and the federally funded contracts that keep thousands employed directly and provides diposable income to keep merchants and service industries going.
Alabama Republicans don’t care about the people; they want it their way or no way. They discovered it's easy to fool an ignorant population by trying to perpetuate the illusion that they are always under attack, from Mexicans or ACORN or Planned Parenthood or gays or takers, global warming hoaxers; it doesn’t matter. They don’t want democracy or social justice; they just want it their way. Most Alabama Republicans are nothing more thana bunch of gullible ‘Honey Boo Boos who think there’s a ‘War on Christmas’ or that he Socialist policies of our Kenyan President are so disastrous that the end of the world is coming. In short..we have a state ruled by idiots over idiots!
The funds spent on defending these state laws, which are unconstitutional from the get-go but are enacted to keep our paranoid voters happy, run into the hundreds of millions of dollars. The irony of it is that the very constitution they profess is the same one they continue to violate. Go figure.
social justice---redistribution of wealth
bunch of retards - Repups this, demos that..... bla bla bla. Politicians only care about one thing, getting reelected and they need party money to do that so they tow the party line. wake up people. Of course DD is doing exactly what they are complaining about.
How much more money will these idiots waste on lawyer fees? The republicans are worse than the democrats about lawyers.
You people have no clue. You are willing to set back and support a government that is slowly taking your rights and freedoms away. What's wrong with you people? Gun control, abortion, you all don't get it. What ever my views are on ech doesn't matter. The federal government has no business creating laws that dictate to states how each state should be ran. It's all about states rights and the fact that the feds are stripping the rights from the states. States rights are larger than any issue wrote about in this editorial. And Rumple, your point is moronic. Saying we shouldn't stand up for our rights because of our dependent on gov jobs is down right stupid. Communism died years ago and now all you all want to do is start it back up but only in our country. Grab a book and learn what communism and socialism is. It's exactly what you people are wanting. You are all stupid!
Hey Roy. You're an idiot. That is all.
Roy needs to take a stand and help run the feddle guvment out of North Alabama. Its really dragging us down. I wonder if Roy has a FHA or VA home loan. Does he anticipate accepting Medicare and Social Security. I wonder if he ever accepted unemployment compensation. Maybe he went to school on a government guaranteed student loan or, worse yet, a Pell grant. Roy definently needs to start a movement.
William is guess that's fare I started the name calling. Rumple I'm sorry, unlike you I have an education, I've never had to take the wheels off or push the steps up to a house I've ever owned and I'm dang sure not going to stand by and let the government how to live, you redneck hick.
Their point, Roy, is that you've clearly bought into all of the political propaganda thus far. Your comment proves the premise of the article...that's all.

Ok S, what have I bought into? I truly do not think our government is bad. I see a tremendous amount of good it does. I get upset the Americans that feel they are owed something from our gov and the politicians that want to give it to win a vote. I get upset when my government tells me I can no longer do something that is my right to do. So what propaganda have bought into? Are you saying the government knows better how I should live my life than I do?
Thanks, Timothy from Calera... We're all dumber because of your asinine statements.
@Roy - I have no delusions about changing your opinions, so I'll just say this: Just as some were able to convince the majority population that our enenies had WMD's, they have convinced many of our citizens that "entitlement folk" are the greatest contributor to our national financial crisis.Likewise, they have you believing that the President can enact laws single handedly and strip us of our constitutional rights with a stroke of his pen. What I'm saying is that you need to understand more clearly the process required for constitutional amendments and the federal government's role where State law is concerned instead of bieng puppeted.
